About this test
Typing speed in English is measured in words per minute, where every 5 characters count as one word. The average office worker types around 40 WPM, fast typists pass 80, and professional transcriptionists exceed 100.
This test counts only correctly typed characters over 30 seconds, so accuracy matters as much as raw speed. The Korean version of this page measures keystrokes per minute instead, because each Korean syllable takes 2 to 4 keystrokes.

In everyday life
- Work: a 10 WPM difference is about 5 minutes saved per 30 minutes of writing.
- Communication: people who reply fast on Slack are almost always fast typists.
- Study: when you take notes by typing, speed is how much you capture.
FAQ
What is the difference between WPM and CPM?
CPM counts characters, WPM divides that by 5. A 250 CPM typist is a 50 WPM typist.
Does keyboard layout matter?
Dvorak and Colemak claim less finger travel, but the layout you know is the fastest. This test only looks at the output.
Does it work on phones?
Yes, but on-screen keyboards are usually slower than physical ones. Compare like with like.
